The Bristol Hippodrome Boxes
This weekend Bristol celebrates its son Cary Grant who got his love of the theatre in the Hippodrome working as a 'call boy' (knocking on the dressing room doors to announce the start of the show) after he was expelled from school. He never acted here but several of his films were shown here when the theatre became a picture house for a short while. It is a Victorian/Edwardian theatre and was lavishly decorated with gold leaf and with symbols of the sea. These ladies represent ship figureheads and it was decided there were better uses for restoration funds so the ladies did not get the gold leaf treatment.
