The Santisima Trinidad - Alicante Marina
This is the figurehead of the full size replica of the Santisima Trinidad which is berthed in Alicante Marina. At the time (1769) she was reputed to be the largest warship in the world (having up to 140 guns). It didn't do her much good at the Battle of Trafalgar however as her great bulk and slow speed made her a sitting duck and sadly she was pounded into surrender by several British ships. She was scuttled the day after the battle when a great storm arose depriving the British Navy of the much anticipated bounty money. Oh dear... I have always wanted to capture this shot and show the contrast between then and now - see the expensive yachts just behind? I wonder what Nelson and the Spanish commanders would have made of the scene?
