Loop 7 Foillakilly
Another beautiful day forecast, the boots were donned and we headed off to do the Foillakilly Loop - 10km on the northside. The start is a good cardiac workout as you clamber upwards onto the mountain, going up and then down and then up again. You then walk along the spine of the Peninsula in an eastward direction. It was incredibly wet and boggy underfoot and we skidded and slipped our way along. Some bogholes actually have fencing around them complete with luminous orange poles. A bit of scrambling up soggy ridges was also involved. Here we are at the top of the world, Bantry Bay to the left and Dunmanus Bay to the right with some rich colours and amazing cloudage. You eventually descend onto the Goat's Path and it's a long slog back upwards again. It was so quiet today, we just heard a few bees buzzing and the odd raven, otherwise nothing. We met not a soul but were stopped in our tracks by an incredibly hairy caterpillar. More pix here.
Bigger might be better.
