The Road into Teller, AK

Another adventure! Today I drove the road from Nome to Teller, 72mi (116km) of what must be one of the most scenic roads in the world. I had plenty of time to gaze around as I was with a resident of Nome, whose rhetoric is only matched by his delightful personality. Past frozen rivers and deep russet willows spread across the tundra, we skirted around the Kigluaik Mountains (with the van shaking in the 50mph gusts, same as yesterday) until we started down the steep slope leading to the tiny town of Teller, which is situated on the southern half of the spit called Nook (or "Nooke") in Inupiaq, on the northern shores of the Bering Sea.

Remote? Definitely. With a population of around 300 and located at 65°15′26″N 166°21′14″W, Teller is about due to be cut off for the winter, as the road to Nome will become impassable any week now. And then? It'll be going to town by snowmobile or plane, or maybe dogsled for the adventurous.

You could fly in here . . .

Over the bay, a deep water port called Port Clarence, is another town called Brevig Mission, which is even more remote, as it can't be reached by road at all.

What a day! Thanks so much Richard for a fascinating day - you could leave many a guide in the dust.

Thanks so much everyone for popping my image of the frozen Nome River onto Spotlight yesterday! I'm stoked that so many of you liked it :)
