'Working with a toy car' by David Sherry...

...on Stephen Murray's Sculptural Velodrome, at the Briggait.

We walked in on David Sherry in mid-'broom broom'.

He was on all fours pushing his little toy car along, brooming at the top of his voice. There was nothing else to do but join in. Well, the boys did. I would have felt a fraud joining in with an artistic performance that involved a fair few adults 'brooming' with such artistic purpose. My brooms would have been shallow, meaningless and just for show. Better to just stand back and appreciate the artists at work. I think my boys taught them a thing or two though.

Brooming really isn't about having such control over your little car and pushing it along in one direction. It's about giving it its own voice and lobbing it about to see how well made it is. The 'artists' took far too much control of their cars' direction. They gave it their own voice and they didn't explore what those little cars were capable of (apart from the guy who threw his car from the balcony - he got it).

It was an experience. The boys absolutely loved it and we all thoroughly enjoyed our tour of the artists's studios afterwards. So much beautiful art to enjoy. So much cake and sweeties for the boys to enjoy (thank you to the lovely artists who cut their beautifully baked cake especially for my boys!).

Trip to the Lego shop to spend all their birthday money after.

Lovely, lovely day.
