What's In A Street Name 11 - Cowfold Close

Another wet day so it was back to Crawley! It was dry enough on the way home for me to do a few road nameplates and this one seemed appropriate.

Cowfold lies between Horsham in the NW and Henfield to the south at the junction of the A272 and A281. Until 1974, Cowfold was the last parish in West Sussex travelling along the A272 eastbound. Until then, the next parish, Bolney was in East Sussex. Cowfold has a fine church dating from the 13th Century and contains the most important memorial brass in Sussex. This is to Prior Nelond, who was one of the Priors of the great Cluniac Priory of Lewes, dissolved by Henry VIII in 1536.

To mark the hundreth anniversary of the start of World War I, poppies have been planted on the verges by pupils of the Primary School. At Christmas, a football match will take place on the Recreation Ground to mark the event of the Christmas Match between British and German soldiers in 1914.

Cowfold has a lot of history and I have been a member of their local history society for the past three years. This year I have been elected onto the main committee which is how I can tell you what's happening! Cowfold Close is in the Bewbush Neighbourhood on the Western side of Crawley.
