Remembrance 3: Souvenir

Wikipedia tells us what a souvenir is (in case you don't already know)

A souvenir (from French, for memory), memento or keepsake is an object a traveler brings home for the memories associated with it. Souvenirs include clothing such as T-shirts or hats, postcards, refrigerator magnets, miniature figures, household items such as mugs and bowls, plates, ashtrays, egg timers, spoons, notepads, and paintings plus many others. They may be marked to indicate their origin such as "A rock from Stonehenge".

Being a grey day in which blip hunting wasn't a sensible option and since I'm anyway resisting the obvious clichés of remembrance that are all around in the monuments, graveyards and memorials of any city (at least until I'm desperate) I found myself in the Scotch House on Princes Street browsing and observing what the few tourists in Edinburgh are buying as souvenirs these days. I was going to have to buy something and while I didn't want to spend too much on something that was going to be photographed and then thrown away, I wanted it to be something that someone genuinely bought. So I lurked by the till waiting and watching.

Some kind gentleman from somewhere decided that this was a suitable way to remember his trip to Scotland. Perhaps to give as a gift to someone he loves, although not enough to buy something nice costing more than £2.99 (or two for £5).

A fridge magnet with twa dugs. Not Burns' twa dugs. I might come back later with more info on these two.

Update: as far as I can see the pairing of the black Scottish Terrier and white West Highland Terrier originates in the 1890s when James Buchanan paired the dogs as the logo for his Black and White whisky. The whisky was introduced with, and took its name from its distinctive bottling - a black bottle and white label.
