Bebelatz, Berlin

The historic buildings around Bebelplatz are still being rebuilt. They include part of the Humboldt Universitat, whose alumni include Marx, Engels and Liebknecht. This was the square in front of the University, where Hitler ordered 20,000 books that he didn't like to be burnt. There is now a monument of empty shelves in an underground room which can be viewed through a pane of glass, and beside it this metal plate with words from the Jewish poet Heinrich Heine written in 1820 in response to the burning of the Koran by the Spanish Inquisition.

Translated they mean "Where they start by burning books, they will end by burning people".
