The Art Critc

I don't describe myself as an art critic but people like labels and I often get called An Art Critic. I prefer the term arts writer as I write stories about art and artists
One of my predecessors at The Herald was the late, great Cordelia Oliver, who was an artist as well as a writer.
Feared by many but always rigorous and a very elegant, passionate writer.
Sadly, I never met her. I think I'd have liked her a lot.
This caricature is from a long out-of-print book called Bullseyes. It's a collection of brilliant caricatures by the late Dan Ferguson, who was a Scottish painter of some note and a tutor to many fine painters who emerged from Glasgow School of Art in the 1960s/70s and 80s.
There's a fab wee exhibition, The Airdrie Boys, on at RGI Kelly Gallery on Douglas Street, in Glasgow until November 1st.
It features work by Dan and his lifelong buddy, John Cunningham. The two men died in 1993 and 1998 respectively. This exhibition has been organised by Dan's artist daughter, Anne, and John's nephew, Alan Riach (well known poet and academic).
Anne brought along this rare book for me to see today, taking the mick out of various people associated with GSA in the 1970s.
I wish I'd known The Airdrie Boys too!
