Throughout the 20th century sheep farming has been the back bone of the New Zealand economy. We have the vital ingredients of a temperate climate and fertile soils and have also had progressive sheep breeders. The pictured sheep are Perendales,which is a cross of two English breeds : the Romney and the Cheviot. Their name comes from Professor Peren of Massey University who developed the breed. They are an extremely hardy and active animal very well suited to our steep hill country.This photo shows how alert and wary these sheep are.
