Random Jake Bugg Concert
Well here is somewhere I didn't expect to be tonight!
My brother is ill (again) so he had to give up his ticket to see Jake Bugg with Megan this evening. This happened once before when I went to see Dweezil Zappa. The poor sod is suffering from his inflamed sinuses again .. that's my brother, not Dweezil Zappa ... I have no idea to Zappa Jnrs current state of health.
But I digress ...
I am not a big Jake Bugg fan to be honest, but I thought I wouldn't refuse the use of an otherwise wasted ticket. So I met the sis in law and niece down in Cardiff for an evening of self indulgent warbling.
It was a very modern concert! I spent half my time getting wound up by the group of girls in front who spent the entire support act section of the gig taking selfies and chatting really loudly. At one stage they had taken so many selfies they could have spliced them together in a time lapse! It was ludicrous. It's ridiculously distracting to have an iPhone flash light waved in your face endlessly! There seemed to be some kind of competition to how many "likes" they could get on Facebook ... to be honest, the support acts could have walked off stage, stuck a CD on and half the crowd would probably not have noticed as they were glued to a smart phone and talking .. really loudly ...
Another modern gig thing that .... why do people now go to the concert for a chat .. if you want to chat go to a pub please .. I paid to listen to the music and not a tale of who's shagging who ...
At least when Jake Bugg hit the stage, who was rather decent by the way, a lot of talent for someone so young, and he has a major future ahead of him you fancy, they finally at least faced in the general direction of the stage. For a while ...
And here is the crux of it ... Jake Bugg plays intimate acoustic solo stuff in a massive arena, and it doesn't work with that fan base. Several times you were listening to Bugg over the chatter levels of the crowd ... not good!
He is another one of those modern artists who doesn't interact with the crowd .. hello Cardiff wouldn't have gone a miss, or the odd thank you. Instead we have song after song that segue into each other seamlessly. When he finally did return to the up beat and electric numbers it took until the last but one song to wake the crowd back up from their social media stupor.
The gig went out on a real high, of course ending with Lightening Bolt, the one Jake Bugg song everyone knows whether they realise it or not.
It was a great gig despite what you might think from this blog, Jake Bugg is definitely work in progress, and will be around for quite sometime to come.
