An organ for today

The newly rebuilt and fashioned organ at the Lord Mayor's Chapel in Bristol, as mentioned by Cath here.

The organ is on the south side of the choir, the console on the north side, and instead of connections being by cable under the floor, they are now by wifi, so there are no physical connections of any kind between manuals and pipes. Clever stuff!

Back in the Bad Old Days, keys on the keyboard and pipes would be connected by a series of levers, which meant some incredibly intricate mechanisms on large organs, and often meant they were very heavy to play, because not only were you pressing a key down, you were operating a whole series of levers as well. And you probably had to persuade somebody to pump the bellows while you played. What a wonderful thing electricity is!
