RAF Holbeach

is a target practise area a few miles from the small town of Holbeach. It's not an air force base in the usual sense, no runways, no planes, and no permanent staff on site, just the locked observation towers and empty helipad. What happens is that Monday to Friday the jets come from RAF bases elsewhere to fire their cannon and drop their bombs on targets on the marshes between where I stood and the sea way off to the left. Various servicemen at ground level and in the towers observe the trajectories of the planes and strive to improve the general accuracy of the pilots' activities.

I hope you agree I've shown that this bleak isolated area suits the purposes for which it is used. At the weekends the only activity is frequent dog walking and occasional photography.
