Being Tourists In Our Own City (and, a rant)
Almost a week after arriving home we are still suffering with jet lag, so today we thought some fresh air and a wander around the city would help.
We made for Glasgow's Riverside Museum, which is much admired for it's zig-zagging roof design. The architecture is stunning, but the museum itself was a huge disappointment. My photo for today goes some way to illustrate the issue. Vintage cars, stacked on shelves like toys. I can see how this sounds amazing on paper, but in reality it made for a very frustrating experience. Show me a vintage car and I want to see the instruments, the upholstery and interior design. At this museum there is no vantage point to see inside the cars, or even get close to them. There are description cards at the bottom shelf with images of cars you can no longer see as the view is obscured by the shelf. All in all, bizarrely designed and a real shame given the quality of its previous incarnation at the Transport Museum.
So, we abandoned the Museum in favour of a walk around the West End. We were quite taken with all the independent shops and general buzz of the area. Then it was into the city where I bought my first ever comic books at Forbidden Planet ('Fables' and 'Mind the Gap' if you're interested). We always have a good day out in Glasgow and we forget to explore because we're in and out every day for work: maybe one day we will be able to afford a nice city pad so we can have it all on our doorstep. We picked up some nice sweet treats in Peckham's then had a lovely dinner complete with half price cocktails. More than made up for the earlier disappointments!
