I think I'm crazy
After traveling more than ten hours we are finally on Kökar. I'm knackered. And I think I must be crazy. To come to such a remote island in the middle of the winter, the air temperature -17°C in a storm through the ice covered sea. We must be both crazy, with Timo.
We drove from Espoo in about four hours to Galtby harbor. Our friend Chrisse and her husband, who were so kind to rent us their apartment here on Kökar, came on the same ferry (Skiftet) from Kökar, that we were going to travel with. The ferry had to work itself through the thick ice all the way. There was no fairway because the ice was so thick on the sea. So the ferry was three hours late.
Finally the ferry came, and loaded all the four cars, this was kind of crazy, too, because there is space for 42 cars. I was a little worried. On our way, I went up to the bridge in the snow storm (the stairway is without any shelter) and knocked on the door. I introduced myself and asked if I can come in and take some photos.
I didn't expect that I'd be invited in, but I was. There was pilot Erik Anders Karlsson (in the photo) and sailor Robert Persson who both were very kind and showed me around. From the window you can see the ice on the sea and the snowing.
Erik Anders told me that even if they just had come from Kökar with the ferry, the fairway freezes in less than an hour. So now the ferry was shaking and making a terrible noise when braking through the ice again. What a trip! Truly crazy. But here we are, happy, knackered and safe.
Here is some music which I got to think about on the ferry.
Thank you all so much for your kind comments on my yesterday's blip, I'm right now so tired but I will get back to you asap.
