tiling outside the Andrew Wiles Building - the Oxford Mathematical Institute. Stopped on the way home to enjoy the Festival of Photography after a moving funeral this morning for one of the more impressive people I worked with, Peter A.

Today is also the feast of St Jerome and therefore International Translators' Day. St J. translated the Bible into Latin. So I think of my favourite translator K, who is also a mathematician.

The exhibition at the Maths Institute was an impressive array of portraits by Mariana Cook, of Mathematicians, and of figures in the world of Justice. One of the former was, briefly, my tutor - the number theorist and later Professor Emeritus Bryan Birch. That I learnt nothing and rapidly changed direction was not his fault.
