The Aye's didnt have it

When I was at primary school in south west Scotland (or Galloway if you prefer) I once got punished for using "aye" instead of "yes", the punishment was to be smacked across the knuckles with a ruler.Years later at a parents night at my son's high school I was told of an initiative by the school called "Porty Blethers" which encouraged kids to use words and phrases that reflected their own culture, one example given was that "aye" was a perfectly reasonable substitute for "yes" and the pupils were not to be told that it was wrong.
