Crete (5 of 5)
The water finally came back on this morning which meant we could have a shower and clean up for the long journey home. Then, as we were about to head off back to Heraklion by car, the heavens opened and the village got the rain they were hoping for. 2 dry winters and 40 degree heat meant that the river/stream/creek was dry for the first time in living memory.
Stopped off in Rethimno on the way to Heraklion for lunch. Another circuitous walk to find a restaurant which was never found. Instead we stumbled across a different one which was very nice. Down the wee side streets and not too touristy. Caught in another huge rain storm on the way back to the car.
Dad dropped us off at Heraklion airport and we said our quick goodbyes (more heavy rain and parked in a dodgy spot).
We chatted to a lovely old woman called Rachel, holidaying to Crete from Israel with a party of 21 relatives (3 of which later got stuck in a lift in departures). She was in love with Dexter and he seemed to be quite fond of her too.
He wasn't so fond of the queues. None of us were. Almost an hour in a queue for bag drop. If it wasn't for the fact we had Dexter with us, we would have had to queue the same again to take the bag to the x-ray scanners. A ridiculous system.
On top of all that, the flight was delayed over an hour.
Dex slept fitfully in my arms throughout the flight. Felt more cramped than on the way out, plus I was much more tired.
Eventually landed in Edinburgh at around 1 am, (3am Cretan time) and was collected by Sam's dad.
Sam bought pies form the all night baker round the corner and we ate then slept.
