why are these church-like carvings set into a wall in a back street, secondary, yard?

(thanks to the blipper who led me to the yard where the mock western buildings are - fascinating! sorry i can't find his blip for a link)

looking closely at the wall it suggests it was built from any materials handy; did the builder want to preserve the artefacts?

any ideas?
