Soft Light

I'm discovering the joys of renting camera equipment. Just used a 70-200mm f2.8 Nikor over the weekend (this shot was taken with it to test it in low light). What a gorgeous lens, with crystal clarity and a beautiful shallow DoF when fully extended. Unfortunately, at over 3 lbs, it's not a "walk about" lens. Any suggestions for other lenses to try and why? Am in an experimental mode :))
