Darter

We went on a wild goose search today. We saw thousands of geese but not the one I wanted to see. There were hundreds of pink footed geese flying in and settling on the saltmarsh but no sign of the very rare visitor from North America. Over the last few days a Ross’s Goose has been sighted at Aberlady Bay. I couldn't find it in any of my bird books so had to look on the web but didn’t see anything remotely like it today. Judging by the number of people with their huge binoculars and cameras perhaps some did. A Little Egret which is still rare in Scotland was fishing right beside the footbridge but my photo was poor. So instead I managed to get one of the Common Darter which stayed long enough on the footpath before darting quickly away. This dragonfly is common in England but only fairly recently has extended its range into Scotland. (best seen in large)
