Havin' a Giraffe
There was as much chance of me seeing an actual giraffe this morning, as getting to Edinburgh in time for my meeting.
The train set off as planned at 7.55am. Before we'd even left the outskirts of Inverness, things didn't feel right. The guard apologised for the "ride quality", which was like bad turbulence on rails, caused by the wheels slipping on the wet track after some overnight rain. He added, he "hoped we'd make it to the top of the hill".
By the time we got to Daviot, the train had come to a complete standstill and had started to slide backwards. The driver decided the only option was to go back to Inverness and "have another run at it".
We're talking about late September, in Scotland (which isn't averse to a bit of precipitation), and not exactly tropical rainfall overnight. Wait until the snow and ice comes...
65-minutes after leaving Inverness, I was back where I started, and decided staying in the office was a more productive use of my time.
