Edinburgh Centre for Carbon Innovation

Doors Open Day 2

This is the view from the Old High School in High School Yards, built in 1777, over towards Calton Hill with, to the right (thin grey roof), the Royal High School, built in 1829 and vacated in 1968.

In between is the decorative pediment of a George Heriot Free School building, founded in 1837, closed in 1885, now a Salvation Army hostel (not to be confused with Heriot's Hospital, which opened in 1659, on Lauriston Place).

We are standing on the roof terrace of the old school building, remodelled and occupied by ECCI, constructed using carbon-neutral materials and methods to create meeting venues and research into new carbon technology.
