Traditional Cumbrian Fayre
Today Stephen I had a trip to Cockermouth for the annual Food Festival. These young ladies were kind enough to pose for a quick shot.
They were from The Grasmere Gingerbread Shop and were selling local Cumbrian goods including authentic Grasmere Gingerbread.
Grasmere lies in the heart of the English Lake District National Park, just north of Lake Windermere. This world famous village is a classic tourist attraction; here is Dove Cottage, the home of the English Poet William Wordsworth, it is also the home of Sarah Nelson’s Grasmere Gingerbread.
The shop where the gingerbread is made was built in 1630 and was originally the village school.
The recipe is locked in the National Westminster Bank in Ambleside. The business is owned and run by the Wilson family, and has been for over 60 years. Each day visitors to the shop are greeted by the wonderful aroma of freshly baked gingerbread and an atmosphere that's bursting with tradition.
Although Wordsworth taught in the building, the shop has had some very famous customers - Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman and family, Virginia McKenna, Alan Whicker, Colin Welland, Brian Cant, Anne Kirkbride. Those who have been to film and record at the shop include Brian Johnson, Jenny Powell and the "No Limits" team, Robert Smith (Carlton Food Channel) and the "This Morning" team and many overseas and regional film crews.
Much of the above information is taken from the shops website. Have a look if you want to know more.
All I know is that the Gingerbread is delicious!
