Bad bad boy

This piece of art is an eight-metre high sculpture of a nude male figure urinating into the Baltic Sea. The statue, named "Bad Bad Boy", a counterpart to Manneken Pis who famously spends his days peeing into a Brussels fountain.

"Bad Bad Boy" is made by Finnish artist named Tommi Toija. Apparently this statue has even been in Örebro Sweden where it has divided opinions like here. When I first saw it I couldn't believe my eyes. But I've grown to like it. This is a temporary placement as well, but there are lots of people who'd like it to stay put. Myself included.

Anyway this piece of art is self-irony of Finnish culture where people drink too much and urinate on the streets at nights. I think it hits the mark splendidly! And you know that it's right in front of our Presidential Palace. I think that itself says a lot of our capability of self-irony.

I also visited Hotel Manta. Another temporary piece made by Japanese artist Tatzu Nishi. It's a functional hotel made over one of our most famous statues Havis Amanda. From the art museums website:

The beloved mermaid of Helsinki Havis Amanda will get a hotel room all her own. Invited by the Helsinki Art Museum, Japanese artist Tatzu Nishi (b. 1960) has concepted a unique art project around the statue. From public artworks in the collections of the Helsinki Art Museum, Nishi chose Havis Amanda, or just Manta as she is commonly known, created by sculptor Ville Vallgren in 1905. Hotel Manta of Helsinki is Nishi’s first work in the Nordic countries.

All nights in the hotel were sold out immediately, but you are most welcome to visit Hotel Manta of Helsinki from 15 August to 12 October 2014 between 11.30 am and 5.30 pm (entrance fee 3e).
