Brugge
Or Bruges if you prefer the French spelling.
First photo, top left is from our hotel room, sunrise over the roof tops.
This was a stuff our faces day.
There are many museums in Brugge, most of them cultural but we opted to visit the ones which guaranteed some edible tasting.
First stop was the Beer Museum - there are beer shops everywhere most of them boasting a stock of over 600 Belgian varieties. Unlike Southwold,no Adnams in sight!
The Chocolate museum (bottom right) was the next stop. There are hundreds of chocolate shops in Brugge. They're amazing, tons and tons of chocolate everywhere, piled up on trays....drool.
We also went to a a potato museum (only because the chocolate museum ticket gave free entry) - the Belgians claim to be the ones who invented French fries, not the French. No freebie edibles here, I wouldn't bother with this one if you ever find yourself in Brugge!
My mum always used to say its rude to eat out in the street. Well, for lunch, we had French fries (cooked in Belgium so I guess they were Belgian fries) but ate them rudely, in the street.
More food included waffles with cream (also rudely eaten) which were soooo yummy. There are lots of waffles here too, along with the beer and chocolate.
A wander around in the afternoon led us to a little tea-room (photo, bottom left) which looked out upon the statue of JanVan Eyck. Who the eck is Van Eyck you ask? He was a painter. Now you know.
We ate dinner in Arthie's restaurant, just round the corner from our hotel which was a fun restaurant with its wacky decor (see photo top right), great platefuls of tasty food and an owner who bore an uncanny resemblance to Billy Connolly! Never have I seen flip-flops on the wall or multi-coloured plastic elephants adorning a restaurant but it added to the fun.
Last stuffing of the faces occurred after a final walk around this fine city when we enjoyed big ice creams, rudely in the street :)
