Cheshire wood
This wood looks a bit of a scratty mess - it has been abandoned by the owners and has reverted to nature. It would be interesting to know what wildlife lives in there. It is what is known in the north-west of England as a moss and what I would expect Cheshire to have looked like in medieval times - very boggy and with silver birch as the predominant species of tree. There are many patches of land in the county that were similar - in 1884, Lindow Man, who died in the first century AD, was discovered in a preserved state when peat was being extracted from Lindow Moss near here.
I can just see Sir Gawain struggling through this very difficult landscape on his way to the Green Chapel - or is that a bit fanciful?
