Largest caterpillar of the year!
I was at Butterfly World, near St Albans, today mowing some of their amazing wild flower meadows. The reward, after a few hours hard mowing, (as well as seeing my friends there!) was a leisurely walk around the site seeing all the great things they are doing. The leaf-cutter ants were brilliant, but despite taking a number of photos I was defeated by their speed and unpredictability of route, carrying their precious burdens along the rope linking the foraging area with the nest. Far easier to photograph was my favourite area - the Very Hungry Caterpillar Garden. How wonderful to bring this iconic story to life for the children who visit and, in the process, teach them to recognise some of the plants that caterpillars feed on.
