Sir Isaac Newton

The marketing manager for one of my clients is based in London and when we meet up, we do so at the British Library. If you haven't been (and you have the opportunity) it's a great building to wander 'round and the café is very pleasant. That's if you can find a table that isn't taken by a freelancer hunched over their MacBook.

It was only today that I paid any real attention to this wonderful statue in the forecourt. After a little research when I got home, I found it's by Sir Eduardo Paolozzi and it depicts Sir Isaac Newton. You can read a bit about it on the Tate website here. That piece discusses one of aspects that I liked, which is that Newton looks like he was built, as if he himself is the result of the science that he studied.

But what I also really like is the way that he's hunched over in that uncomfortable position, like a child concentrating on something on the ground. I don't know whether it's what Paolozzi intended but it makes me think of Newton as unpretentious and open-minded.
