Anglesey Barracks

Exploring the slate miners barracks at Dinorwic Quarry above the Welsh town of Llanberis.
At its peak the Dinorwic quarry employed over 3000 men and many of those men either lived locally caught the quarry train on the Padarn Railway to work each day.
Many men however required to lodge, or barrack, at the quarry each week, leaving home early on a Monday morning and returning on Saturday afternoon. Provisions for the week were carried on their journey and their home for the week was the barracks high up in the quarry.
Anglesey barracks consists of 2 rows of 11 identical units facing each other across an unmade street. Each unit had a living room with a fireplace and a bedroom with space for four men. Amenities were few with just basic furniture and little else. The only windows faced the 'street'.
This way of life continued until 1948 when the units were deemed 'unfit for human habitation'.
