Ruthven Barracks

What a surprise to drive around a corner and see a huge fortress on the top of a hill.

The Ruthven Barracks were built in 1719, but were destroyed by the retreating Jacobite's after the Battle of Culloden in 1746. The remaining buildings are amazingly well preserved and the layout is clearly seen and described around the site. 120 troops were housed here, plus officers, and up to 30 horses.

GD is leaning on the stable gates and one of the accommodation towers can be seen in the background beside the central living/dining area. There was also a bakehouse, a brewhouse, a guardhouse, a prison cell, and latrines.
