Battle Abbey
The abbey takes its name from the town that was formed to commemorate the bloody battle that saw William the conqueror assume control of England.
Little remains of the original buildings ,but the site of the high alter of the abbey church, which was reputedly placed on the spot where Herold died is still marked by a commemorative stone .
In 2013 the television programme Time Team ,suggested that the battle actually occurred not at this site but 200 yards to the south were there is now a road junction of the A2100, but one thing is for sure the battle that changed the course of English history took place at this now small county town .
The site of Battle Abbey is now run by English heritage
