Red-breasted flycatcher
A much enlarged image of a wee bird. Today I went to Sanday on an annual RSPB excursion there looking for migrant birds. It is pretty handy being driven around with expert help to hand. Eight of us went over. A pied flycatcher at Stove was an early notable bird. At the doctor's garden in Lady village there were at least six willow warbler; blackcap, chiffchaff, garden warbler and a lesser whitethroat. The local ranger, Roddy Thorne, turned up and mentioned that there was a red-breasted flycatcher near Start lighthouse. I'd hoped to go there anyway and really wanted to see the bird so we headed up there. The tide was low so we crossed to the point dry-shod and a birdwatcher pointed out where the bird was. It was flitting around a ruined cottage and we got nice views. We had to head off soon, though, for the ferry. A nice day out.
