Woodland Magic

This is an Amethyst Deceiver - Laccaria amethystina, - which gets its name, not because it deceives - far from it - but from its close relationship to The Deceiver - Laccaria laccata, which is very variable in shape, size and colour, and often does fool the most expert mycologist at first sight.
Amethyst Deceivers grow in broadleaf woodland, and round here at least, seem to favour beech, which is great as the wonderful colour of the fungus goes strikingly with the rich rusty colour of the beech leaves. They are very common fungi, and this year, there are huge carpets of them. I've given this a bit of extra sparkle by shining a small LED light on the gills.
