Women's Suffrage Memorial Khartoum Place Auckland
Today 20 September 2014 one day before the spring equinox, Kiwis go to the polls to elect a new government for the next 3 years.
I worked at our local high school from 7.30am to 10.30pm, issuing votes and counting them after the voting booths closed at 7pm, so not a lot of opportunity to go out and take picture!
I thought I would blip a photo of the centenary memorial to women's suffrage in Khartoum Place in Auckland. It's a tile mosaic of Kate Sheppard and her band of sisters.
Kate led the fight for women's right to vote. On 19 September 1893, the Governor, Lord Glasgow, signed a new Electoral Act into law. As a result of this landmark legislation, New Zealand became the first self-governing country in the world to grant all women the right to vote in parliamentary elections. By a happy coincidence, the general elections were held one day after the day that marked the 121st anniversary of that day when women were granted the vote in New Zealand.
