The Waag of Leeuwarden

A 'Waag' or a public weigh house is generally found in the center of a market town, in this case in Leeuwarden in the northern province Friesland.

It was traditionally used by market traders to determain the exact weight and measurement. This building was mainly by dairy merchants for their butter and cheese, but also for large meat quantities.

This building replaced a previous "waag' and is built somewhere around the year 1590 and has been in use until 1880. It's currently used as a lunchroom with a terrace in summer.

Have a nice weekend!
