Hips but not Haws-

Tthese were growing in a garden hedge on the edge of the village - i wonder if birds can actually eat them as they are so big?
It made me think about the term' hips and haws' but when I checked haws are the fruits of the hawthorn.
My week at school finishes with a fantastic samba drumming lesson for the class - the children love it and it is very good for many other skills - good fun but very noisy - I may ned to lie down in a very quiet darkened room!!!
