Crossing Keeper's cottage
On the edge of the village there is a level crossing over the line from Barrow to Manchester Airport. Of course it is totally automated with flashing lights and barriers.
But in days gone by it depended on a crossing keeper who would come out and open and close the gates manually. He lived in a railway owned house right next to the crossing.
The house is now occupied by someone else but this picture of the garden gate shows how much the crossing keeper loved his job.
