The Sea End

Walked the entire length of the Ulverston Canal today, as part of a circular walk around Ulverston and the Morecambe Bay coast at Canal Foot and Bardsea.

The canal has been variously described as the deepest, widest and straightest canal in the UK. The first two are probably not right, although the third probably is. The canal might also be a contender as the shortest canal in the UK, it's entire length being just over a mile.

The canal's heyday was in the first half of the 19th Century, although it did remain in some sort of use up until the 1940s. I think the lock gates are going to need some TLC before they see traffic again.

This picture is looking along the canal from the bridge at the suitably named Canal Foot.
