Rememberance
In Spean Bridge, not far from where my Grandfather and Grandmother (Nannie in recent posts) are buried, there is the Commando Memorial. An extremely famous monument, situated in the training area for the first Commandos in the British Army. Photographed many times by hundreds of thousnads of people and desevedly so, it is a wonderful landmark depicting three Commandos looking out over the hills and the area.
This picture is of the memorial garden recently built in the same grounds as the Commando Memorial, a place where loved ones leave plaques, stomes and crosses in rememberance of those lost. Many are marked with personal items like wristbands and even a bottle of whisky, empty of couse.
Times like this, when we come to think about death and the grief felt by others, made me think of bringing this garden to an extremely modest but wider audience. Remembering one person is very important for friends and family, remembering all who are lost is important for everyone. I think that what I am trying to say is that it is impossible to grieve for an unknown number of people lost since the great war, no matter how wonderful and inspiring the memorials are, but this garden gives everyone a chance to see how real it is for every family involved and it is very real for every family.
