reservoir
Llandegfedd Reservoir covers an area of 434 acres (1.76 km2) & construction of the reservoir started in 1961, damming a tributary of the River Usk, Sor Brook, at a cost of £3,139,858.
To create this stretch of water, four farms & three private houses were totally submerged, with another four giving up land for its use. Most people had moved out by mid 1962 & the filling of the reservoir started in October 1963. Supplies of water were made available to the various local authorities by March 1964.
As well as supplying water to Newport, the reservoir is run as a country park & supports a RYA-recognised sailing & windsurfing school, windsurfers & canoes can be hired & fishing is another common activity on & around the lake.
The reservoir is currently closed for water sports as much needed new facilities are currently being built by Welsh Water, these will include a new purpose built Watersports Centre; it will be reopened in March 2015.
