An amusing afternoon at Brogyntyn

This afternoon we went to Brogyntyn Hall as part of the Heritage Open Days weekend to see some of the areas of the grounds that the public do not have chance to see. I blipped it here. I have to relate the proceedings as it was so amusing.

They had not thought to limit numbers. Seventy cars turned up and at least 150 people. A little lady well into her eighties was our guide. She stood on a step above us and began to tell the history in a very quiet wavery voice which hardly anyone could hear. Someone behind had a screaming child that they didn't remove, then someone's dog began to bark then a jet whizzed over. It was just like a farce!

A man from the crowd offered to shout her words to the masses but he was hard of hearing as was she. She would not talk in short bursts so that he could remember it but rambled on and on. He attempted to relay it was was constantly corrected by our guide. This went on and on for half an hour.

She informed us that that in the war WAAFs were there, he said "in the war rats were there" then was corrected.

I was standing near a friend and caught her eye, we were both on the verge of very inappropriate laughter, how we managed to hold it in (until out of earshot) I don't know!

We walked around continually stopping for the double talk. It was quite a sight (and long wait) to see 150 people climbing over a gate that could not be opened and trooping single file through a long black tunnel.
It was very interesting and we saw lots of private bits of the estate but it was the funny bits that will stay in our memories the longest.
To finish the afternoon F and I were persued by a galloping herd of cattle as we walked back to the car and just got through the gate in time. An afternoon to remember!
