Sizzling September

Spent this morning reading a book on the Romani Gypsies and Nazi Germany - a quote that struck me was,
'before it could become reality, this terrible industrialised annihilation of people had to be thought out - as an idea, a plan, a railway timetable, a technical drawing of a gas chamber or a crematorium. So we must describe the path from a terrible idea through to its becoming a normal occurrence in everyday life under the German National Socialist Party.
It's horrifying to think of all the people that thought about, planned, and OKed these atrocities - thousands upon thousands of Romani (and Sinti) gypsies were killed alongside the Jews... The chapter closes with a few questions...
How could the extermination of Romani Gypsies in Europe appear as a normal process against which there was no protest, be it from the churches or any other quarter? How, above all, was it possible for human beings to be first defined as members of an alien race, then arrested, then stripped of their right and finally murdered? And finally, how and why could the systematic destruction of Gypsies and Jews have taken place?'

It's pretty tough going reading, because it's just so horrendous as a subject...but I'm glad I'm learning about these things..before starting this research, I had no clue the Romani people were as targeted as the Jews. So strange to read about these horrors - then look up and be in beautiful, tourist-y, Ibiza...

Today I'm grateful for;
1) the chance to learn about Romani history.
2) meeting the lovely short-term team.
3) bumping into a lovely lady at nursery, someone I've not seen all summer, but really like! hopefully going for a coffee sometime...
