United Strength is Stronger

In 1820 the Union Chain Bridge was built, stretching almost 130 metres over the River Tweed to connect the village of Fishwick in Scotland to Horncliffe in England. It's Europe’s oldest surviving iron chain suspension bridge, and was built with the intention of strengthening ties between the two nations.

Above the bridge, along with entwined roses and thistles, is the maxim ‘Vis Unita Fortior’ - United Strength is Stronger.
