Fun and Games

This was really the main event of our holiday to Scotland as today was the day we had tickets for the Commonwealth Games Athletics at Hampden.

We headed out from the caravan site around 3pm and made our way to the Park and Ride at Eurocentral. I was very concerned about our timing for travelling as there was no good way to predict the amount of traffic on the road. However, despite the fact that the M8 was as busy as I have ever seen it (that may be the same as it is on a daily basis but it has been a while since I was there) we arrived at Eurocentral at dead on 4pm.

On the coach from the Park & Ride I realise that I had left my wallet back at the caravan in Edinburgh so we had to detour to get some cash out: all the food outlets at Hampden would only accept cash. That said, in many respects, there would have been nothing lost if we hadn’t had cash as we would have spared ourselves the waste of money that resulted from buying the inedible muck being served from the food outlets there.

Apart from the poor quality food, everything about the experience at Hampden was brilliant. The Clydesiders were great at keeping the children feeling the excitement of the event and the action on the athletics field was great. We had good seats near the front in Section A, just at the end of the bend onto the home straight.

I took literally hundreds of photographs and a huge number of them were really good.

We stayed to the bitter end as the evening finish with three medal ceremonies and, for the sake of a slightly earlier bus to the park and ride, it seemed churlish not to stay and watch those ceremonies.

In the end, we left the stadium about 10:50pm and, as a result, there were no queues anywhere from the stadium back to the bus, although there was evidence that, had we left earlier, we would have had to queue baack at the bus loading location.
