Back in #Reykjavik for dinner
A 500 km drive around West Iceland today. Headed north west from Reykjavik and through one of the world's longest underwater road tunnels (6km) at Hvalfjordur (Whale Bay). Spent most of the day on Snæfellsnes Peninsular which is a national park.
The three photograph's in the blip were taken in the same hour!
A paddle in the North Atlantic and a lie on the beach in the sun near Öndverðarnes.
A stroll round the fishing harbour at Ólafsvík
A drive on a narrow gravel track over the top of Snæfellsjökull - a 4745 ft high stratovolcano with a glacier covering its summit. It's the mountain featured in the novel “Journey to the Center of the Earth” (1864) by Jules Verne. It was down to 5 degrees C with snow filled corries at the roadside and near the top dense cloud reduced visibility to about 5 m so we couldn't see the actual summit or the bottom of the sheer vertical drops at the side of the gravel track.
The Kuga came with all the gizmos - ABS, EBD, CBC, EBA, TCS and ARM so it made easy work of the steep climbs, deep puddles, and ruts. The blind crests on the narrow track were a bit hairy you just had to pray nothing was coming fast the other way. It was a real roller coaster experience! On the descent we came across a couple heading up the mountain in an old Opel Astra. I hope they made it safely to the other side.
Back in Reykjavik for 8pm. Duck, fig and fava bean pizza for dinner.
