Revisiting Finholms!

What a long day! After the am swim I had to take our car in as the back passenger window was stuck mid way. They couldn't fix it today because the parts needed are in Portland....? So we wait.

Meanwhile my friend Marilyn picked me up and we headed south and ended up in Gig Harbor...I'd never been there before which is strange since it's so close. She spent many summers in a rental cabin across the shores from the main town part. It was more of a shack back then she said and doesn't exist now. Her Dad had the local milk and butter run in the area over around Gig Harbor. In the evenings she said they would row across the bay and pick him up and bring him "home" to the shack. She has many fond memories of summers spent this way.

One of the most cherished memories she has is of riding with her Dad on his "butter" runs that stocked the local Gig Harbor Finholm market in town. This was in the late 1930's. It was bought by Johnny and Edward Finholm in 1935--they were decedents of Swedish Finns. They owned it on and off until 1079 and then it's traditions of if you bought a Finholm coffee mug refills were free for a lifetime were continued by new owners. This has ended with the most recent owner, but the Finholm name and store still exist. It was a thrill for Marilyn to revisit it today and share her memories with the new owner.

I enjoyed hearing about her good times shacking up near Gig Harbor and riding along on her 'Dad's butter runs. So despite the car still in the shop, a good day was spent and now I'm sporting a little rental for the night.

It was a manic Monday, but a good one:) You can see the Finholm store as it was back in the ole days compared to how it is today in the collage . In the center is my friend Marilyn and the new Vietnamese owner. He was happy to pose with her:) Thank you both.
