It's all getting a little scary now.
A little explanation
This is the centre of Carlisle and is where the road from Edinburgh meets the road from London. The market cross, just behind where I was standing to take this, marks the exact point. When the city was surrounded by a defensive wall, there was a Scotch Gate and an English Gate where these two roads arrived at the city. Perhaps we will have to reinstate the gates in the future. I certainly hope not.
