Indian summer for some butterflies
I just had a short local walk today as my back was worse this morning after a phantom 'recovery' yesterday. The sun was really warm and I saw a surprising number of butterflies despite it being a very ordinary patch of farmland. One stretch of overgrown hedgerow was almost swarming with this beauty - Speckled Wood. It's a species that seems to have done well this summer and there are lots of second generation adults still very active. We may well be seeing them well into October and there should be lots of eggs laid in rough grassy areas along woodland rides and hedgerows. It can then overwinter as either a caterpillar or a chrysalis, the oly British butterfly to do this.
