New Lanark...

This scene is probably unchanged since the 18th century...

Took Mum out for a drive in the sunshine today, and we ended up in New Lanark, a small village steeped in history. Founded in 1786 by David Dale, it was his son-in-law, Robert Owen who gave the village its place in history. Dale and Owen were factory owners who took the view that workers would be happier and more productive if treated better. They provided education for the children of their workers, refused to employ children of less than 10 years of age and gave their workers decent housing and a co-operative style of shopping... way ahead of their time!

It is now a conservation area, and this is probably exactly how this row of houses would have looked 200 years ago...
